Is Mahi Ora for me?
Mahi Ora is for anyone who wants to improve their life, from providing a sense of direction to strengthening life skills. The resources and topics are broad and the programme is non judgmental and open to all, regardless of race, gender or educational background.

What’s involved?

Four kete (kits) of learning resources, including DVDs, books and CDs, will be sent to your home during the 12 months of the programme. To get the most out of your experience, it will take you about 10 - 12 hours per week made up of reading and exercises to reinforce your learning.

Who can enrol in Mahi Ora?
Mahi Ora is available to all New Zealand citizens and permanent residents aged 18 years and over.

What support is offered?
You will be supported in your learning by a kaitiaki (support person). Kaitiaki are trained experienced assessors. They are highly motivated individuals who live in your region. They are approachable and non-judgmental and will visit you at a place of your convenience – your home or the local library for example. Your kaitiaki will support you and provide resources to help you from enrolment to successful programme completion.

When did the Mahi Ora programme start?
Mahi Ora first enrolments for this programme were in 2000. The programme targeted Māori who wanted to engaged in tertiary study for the first time and to improve various aspects of their lives. The unique delivery of the programme featuring kaitiaki (support people) to visit students in their own homes ensured the programme’s success. Since 2001 more than 55,000 students have enrolled in Mahi Ora.

Enrolments have closed for 2010. Places will still be available in 2011
