What does Mahi Ora cover?

Mauri Ora looks at the history of New Zealand and explores the basics of the life and times of Māori culture. Topics covered include Māori customs, protocols, practices and philosophies. You’ll learn about key historical events including migration, colonisation, the New Zealand wars, the Declaration of Independence and the Treaty of Waitangi.


Mauri Ora is available to all New Zealand citizens and permanent residents aged 18 years and over.

Mauri Ora is a fee free, 12 month, home based programme that creates a foundation for cultural awareness and identity and broadens your knowledge of New Zealand history. Through Mauri Ora, both Māori and non Māori achieve a greater understanding of the unique and fundamental culture that gives Aotearoa its unique place in the world.

You learn at your place, at your pace and you can start the programme any time of the year. During the 12 months four kete (kits) full of fantastic learning resources are sent to you and you are supported by a kaitiaki (support person) who will assist and motivate you in your learning.

On completion of the programme you will receive the
National Certificate in Māori
(Te Waharoa) Level 2
