Mauri Ora is part time study that is useful for all New Zealanders – from the nurse who wants to understand more about patient beliefs, to the urban Māori who wants to feel more confident on the marae. In our modern world, many New Zealanders feel they have become distanced from the culture of Aotearoa. Through Mauri Ora, Open Wānanga reconnects students with this culture.
What’s involved?
Throughout the 12 months, four kete (kits) full of learning resources such as DVDs, books and CDs, will be sent to your home. To get the most from your experience the programme will take you about 10 - 12 hours per week, with reading and exercises to reinforce your learning.
What support is offered?
You will be supported in your learning by a kaitiaki (support person). Kaitiaki are trained experienced assessors. They are highly motivated individuals who live in your region. They are approachable and non-judgmental and will visit you at a place of your convenience – your home or the local library for example. Your kaitiaki will support you and provide resources to help you from enrolment to successful programme completion.
What will Mauri Ora do for me and what will I achieve?
• on completion, you will receive the National Certificate in Māori (Te Waharoa) Level 2
• a greater understanding of Māori culture and New Zealand history
• confidence and support to achieve your future goals
• allow you to study at your own place, at your own pace
• provide you a kaitiaki to support your learning
• provide resources, support and programme materials at no cost to you.
The history of Mauri Ora
Mauri Ora was established following the successful launch of another home based fee free life skills programme, Mahi Ora, in 2000. The unique delivery of the programmes, featuring kaitiaki (support people) to visit tauira (students) in their own homes has ensured their success. Since 2001 more than 85,000 students have enrolled in Mahi Ora, Mauri Ora and ESOL. The programmes are delivered by Open Wānanga, a subsidiary of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, one of the country’s largest tertiary education providers.
