Papa Whairawa
Papa Whairawa is a part time programme that will give you the resources and tools to make smart decisions about your money. The resources and topics are all specially chosen to give you financial confidence. You can learn in the comfort of your own home with the programme being designed to fit into your lifestyle and whānau routine regardless of race, gender or educational background.

What’s involved?
Throughout the nine5 months, three kete (kits) full of learning resources such as DVDs, books and CDs, will be sent to your home. To get the most from your experience the programme will take you about 10 - 12 hours per week.

Who can enrol in Papa Whairawa?
Papa Whairawa is available to all New Zealand citizens and permanent residents aged 16 years and over.

What support is offered?
You will be supported in your learning by a kaitiaki (support person). Kaitiaki are trained experienced assessors. They are highly motivated individuals who live in your region. They are approachable and non-judgmental and will visit you at a place of your convenience – your home or the local library for example. Your kaitiaki will support you and provide resources to help you from enrolment to successful programme completion.

The history of Papa Whairawa
Papa Whairawa was established in 2010 by Open Wānanga following the success of its three other home based fee free distance learning programmes, Mahi Ora, Mauri Ora and Papa Ako. It was designed to give students the knowledge and skills to make smart decisions regarding money.  Papa Whairawa has the same unique programme delivery, with kaitiaki (support people) providing support to tauira (students) in their own homes, which has proven successful with Open Wānanga’s other programmes. Open Wānanga is a subsidiary of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, one of the country’s largest tertiary education providers.
